First Farmers Market = Success!

Today was an exciting day! Three teenagers from the area met me at the garden to harvest as much as we could for the Conejos County Farmers Market that was being held today in Manassa, Colorado. We harvested heirloom beets, heirloom radishes, chives, horseradish leaves, spinach, rainbow chard, Anaheim Peppers, Banana Peppers and green and yellow squash! I am impressed at how much we were able to harvest and even more impressed that we sold out today! It was a really great day, as you can tell from the photos below. I am so grateful for all of the adults and teens who came out today to support the garden and our dream of keeping our children and youth connected to the Earth. See you next week at the market in La Jara, Colorado!

Cheers to our 1st Harvest!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the garden last night! We harvested spinach, radishes, tomatoes, chives, horseradish and chard! Two children from local communities were are Head Harvesters, and they even presented all of the produce to the other 30 community members who were present! I honestly don’t know if I could have given a presentation in front of so many people at that age. You can’t tell me that a School & Community Garden isn’t cross-curricular! 😀 And the s’mores with reeses were a major hit – they’ll be back next Tuesday at 6!

Another great meeting!

We had a wonderful meeting tonight at the Garden. 25 community members showed up, we had nachos at my mom’s house, got a temporary roof on the shed, got two bee hives set up, and of course enjoyed the fire and s’mores! Thank you all so much for your continued belief in this initiative.

Oh the plants are a growin’!

We spent a full day out at the garden today, and we’re so thrilled that everything is doing so well! We’ve got quinoa, purple potatoes, white potatoes, tomatoes, many pepper varieties, strawberries, garlic scapes, spinach, radishes, sunflowers, eggplant, squash, pumpkins, nasturtiums, hollyhocks, columbines, corn, hava & kidney beans, dipper gourds, carrots, spearmint, osha, horseradish, French sorrel and more! It’s amazing to think that soon we’ll be harvesting these delicacies and celebrating all of our hard work. It really is magical how something can go from a seed to a full-grown plant in a matter of months.

On another note, we are working to secure funds for the continuation of our garden through the school year and for next summer. We would really appreciate any help you can offer financially. You can donate easily through PayPal on the right-hand side of this site, or you can send us a check following the instructions listed on the right. We appreciate your support!

We hope you enjoy these pictures from today:

One Step at a Time

We want to make a quick shout out to Kitchen Gardeners International for their generous grant this year! Here’s a blog post we wrote on their site about our work and achievements thus far: http://kgi.org/blog/garoutteju/one-step-time. Enjoy! 😀

We’ve got a fire pit! Woot, woot!

Thanks to everyone who came out to help tonight at our weekly garden session. We had some issues with the water, but everyone came together and we got everything watered through a combination of wells and buckets. It really is amazing to see what can happen when everyone works together.

We even got our fire pit dug tonight, so we’ll be sure to have a fire next week with s’mores for all who come out! I can’t wait!

The aspens have a new haircut now and are looking fabulous, and the baby trees in the driveway are nice and protected and supported as well. Great work, team!

Tuesdays at the Garden

We had a wonderful evening over here at Valleybound, nestled between the Sangre de Christo and San Juan Mountain Ranges! The blue skies above us, the rich, brown earth beneath us and the beautiful birds singing their good evening songs – we really do have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful for my family, friends and life which gives me hope.

Below you’ll find some pictures from the evening extravaganzas! Feel free to join us each Tuesday evening at 6pm for some gardening fun!
